It is indeed a matter of our subjective views.

but I highly support the Ranger class, as INT Rangers are rather valueable in a group, and I personal enjoy this role very much. Ranger for me, in the classical Lord of The Rings are kind of like, hidden watchman, defender, protector, to forsee the danger to my team and able to perven them gives me that satifaction.

Also, Spikers team in HA are extreamly fun, being teamed up together with your fellow members, and strike the same target at once, the saifaction of team work and communication is another asspect of the ranger system I enjoy. Although i would be highly interested in doing it with the Assassin when factions is released.

Trapping.
In DnD, I used to play a Rogue, one of the reasons its the power of traps. It is a method to take down your targets using timing and planing, and which allow you to come out of it, completely unharm. This witty role gives me another satifaction, while the view of the sitation when a pack of mods hit my traps, and exploed into a mass is another.

Sprits calling.

Many sprits from the ranger could change or add another the element of game play. there are many many examples, but one that I resonally experience is that, a fellow rangers, turned all of our attacks into fire damage, which added a 3rd of our normal damage on the tree like titans.

Range, gace and sprit.

I personally love archery, and find it quite a spritual spot, its about cleared mind, stillness, focus, and maintain control flexability even under pressure such as a pack of incomming ranging warrior rushing towards to you. Somthing about using agility vs raw force, calimness vs rage I personally enjoy.

plz enlighten me
Ever seen an organized Spike Ranger group in HoH? Ever trap UW? B/P in Tombs? Drok's Run?

It's all in the comfort in knowing that your team would be in big trouble without you...Most people think those who are not up front holding the aggro or seeing meteors come down aren't doing any dmg. Add kindle Arrows so they can see the fire in the are then...lol

You can run a R/E conjure and lay down some serious dmg. To the tune of +30 dmg on a regular arrow hit add an attack you can hit for 80+ dmg and not have to wait for final thrust or a 2-3 sec cast time. How many times have you tried to swing your sword at a ranger with Dryder's up?

Rangers are the only class that can survive on thier pure class alone. I am sure there is a way to do it with all classes but I don't think they could hold up as well. If you ever see most ranger builds they may make use of 1 skill from thier secondary, usually it rebirth for the chargers : )

Like everyone else has already said, Rangers really are the most versatile class in the game. I had the same feeling you did way back on my first ranger, but that was before I really understood what the Ranger could do -- and PvE, honestly, is a really crappy way to find out... (PvE is sort of mucked up due to monsters' abnormally high HP, armor, or bug-brain AI -- making a lot of skills seem underpowered). But after playing through a variety of builds for all the other classes in PvP (which is what Guild Wars seems to have been really designed from the ground up for), I realized what I was missing.

I entered thinking the Ranger would be some sort of high damage sniper like in virtually every other MMORPG, but it definitely isn't in the world of Guild Wars. It's a lot more than that. I won't repeat what everyone has already said, but try thinking of the Ranger as a trippy sort of Mesmer with a bow that also has an emphasis on changing the battlefield itself, yet can also do direct damage with ease. Although the goal of a battle is often to just destroy the other team while staying alive yourself, there's a lot of ways to perform these two functions than just throwing out as much direct damage (eg: nukes) on the enemy and sticking as much direct defense (eg: monk heals) on yourself as you can. For example, an enemy that isn't able to cast their spells thanks to your interrupts isn't much of a threat anymore -- so in this regard, you can almost think of yourself as doing a sort of "monk" function -- defending your team from harm.

Also try capitalizing on the Ranger's versatility. I find that the Ranger cram in a lot of different functions into their skill bar compared to other classes, yet still be effective. Maybe try a skill bar like this one in PvP:

R/Me
14 Marksmanship, 10 Wilderness Survival, 10 Expertise, 8 Domination Magic
Pin Down, Blackout, Savage Shot, Distracting Shot, Apply Poison, Escape {E}, Troll Unguent, Ressurection Signet
+33% Poison Bowstring

It lets you do quite a lot of things for your team, especially in a GvG game. Pin Down lets you cripple, which is invaluable. Blackout on a Ranger is excellent way to perform total skill lockdown, with the casting cost lowered by Expertise and you having more armor to be able to run up to the enemy with impunity. Savage Shot and Distracting Shot are nice, fast interrupts that have an edge over many of the Mesmer interrupts as they have much faster recharge times and can also interrupt skills, not only spells (but also have weaknesses of their own of course, such as blind). Apply Poison is a very nice source of pressure damage when you spread it around the entire enemy team -- forcing their monks to mitigate this damage and greatly stressing their energy stores in the process while the rest of your team breaks them. Escape and Troll Unguent are great skills for Flag Running and taken into context with the rest of your skills, also make you a pretty good duelist in a 1v1 against the enemy flag runner.

So yea, there's a lot more to the Ranger than the stereotypical "sniper guy" in many of the other MMORPG's out there. This class truly can be called a Ranger, and not just some sort of Archer henchman.

I know others have said it...I just want to agree: Rangers are (in my opinion) THE MOST VERSATILE CLASS in the game right now. I can do so many different things with my ranger:

Single target damage (dual/punishing)
AoE damage (barrage with JI or conjure element)
Trapping
Beastmaster (great for ettin farming)
Running (a R/Mo is the fastest and easiest runner anywhere but Droks)
Touch Necro (fun for soloing areas)
Tank (R/W evasion tank with cyclone axe and apply poisen)

And those are the PvE roles...there are others filled in PvP:

Ranger Spike
Spirit Spam
Trapper
R/W hammer/pet (aka Thumper)
Flag Runner in GvG
Sword Degen R/W (poisen+bleed)

Anyway...just thought I'd share...rangers can fill a great number of roles very well. They are also very self-sufficient, so they work well for leading Henchies into SF or other high-level areas. Try out some of the roles you havent...it can make rangers more fun for you! GL!

I deleted my Ranger. I don't like using them period. If at all, maybe Barrage/Pet and Touch. I'm just not a ranger guy, I dunno. I like using warriors and Necros alot.

Well if ur actually bored of ranger, then try soloing with 1. Its so much more fun and requires complete control. u dont rely on any1 but urself. u take care of everything (healing interupts damage dealing condition the whole bit). its quite rewarding to see 1 ranger taking on 3 or 4 spirit willows in the forest of FoW and see them dying. Especially because ur lvl 20 and there lvl 20+ . ya sure u can solo on other proffessions, but i wish i could see the faces of those chest runners when they see "...drops a obsideon which your party reserves for Silent Elvin RANGER" (i imagine it lookins like this thing ---> . then u just see "WTF A RANGER SOLOING?" spam across the chat.I just sit there typing LOL . if u still find ranger boring, then just delete ur ranger and find sumthing more "fun" (maybe factions will hold sum fun for u with the ritualists and assassins.

its been said a fwe times, but to me Ranger is the most fun role in PVP and PVE. rabger can have so many things to do and is more challenging to use then any other role (just not sure about mesmer cuz i dont have one). since playing a good ranger takes more skill and game knowledge, you dont get bored of trying new builds and new areas. i mean, what can be more boring then a healer or a stance tank?

but hey, to each his own! =D

take the time to learn the game well, learn the ranger and you will see how much diffrent and challenging is to solo with ranger then solo with a warior or a 55 monk! it is very exciting to see a whole Ice imps cave empty, or a few spirits in Fow "begging for mercy" lol

last think i can add: Solo rangers are not for Noobs, but my first char was a ranger, i had hard time, untill i found a decent guild. i had no clue ranger can solo untill guildie took me to ice imps, so i died and wached the show (in shok)
